Hello current and future members of the tbirdnation! My name is Bailey Bowthorpe and I’m a senior studying Advertising & Public Relations at SUU. I was a Presidential Ambassador for my first 3 years, and now I have a new job as the SUUSA (student government) Vice President of Academics. There’s just one simple thing you have to know about me: I LOVE SUU. I’ve had so many incredible opportunities to experience more– opportunities I’m convinced I couldn’t have had anywhere else but here.
I traveled with 17 other SUU students 8105.8 miles to the United Arab Emirates.
Crazy right?! 100% true story. Let me tell you about it.
Today, I’m throwin’ it back to my freshman year when I went to the Education Without Borders Conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It all started when I found an article about the opportunity on the SUU homepage and thought, “why not?” might as well apply and see what happens! Several weeks after that, I found out that I had been put on a wait list.
About 3 weeks before the trip, I got a call from the Provost’s (SUU VP of Academic Affairs) office and found out that I had been granted a spot! I was extremely overwhelmed and excited!
This 3 day conference gave us the opportunity to meet students from all over the globe and work together to find “innovative solutions to global challenges”. At eighteen, I was definitely one of the youngest participants there, but I didn’t let that stop me from meeting as many people as possible and experiencing all that I could. Here are some highlights:
This conference taught me in a very literal way that despite diverse backgrounds, cultures, religions and countries, students from across the globe are dedicated to improving the world and being leaders in education and in their communities.
This global perspective has benefitted me for the rest of my time at SUU and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity I had to go. What’s awesome is that students get to travel / study abroad all the time at SUU through our Global Engagement Center. Check out what opportunities are available on their website.
So, there’s my throwback Thursday. Seriously, friends. Who lets a freshman travel to Dubai for an international student conference?!
SUU does. I love this place.
